2009 marked the 150 year anniversary of District Nursing.
The QNI had a productive year, with the publication of "2020 Vision" and numerous celebrations of this important anniversary.
In December, the QNI hosted "The Party in the Port" in Liverpool where District Nursing is said to have its beginnings. In 1859 William Rathbone, a philanthropist from Liverpool, employed the first 'District Nurse' to provide care for the 'sick poor' in their homes. The nursing care of his wife prompted him to campaign for the development of a system of District Nurses.

William Rathbone- the great-great grandson of the founder of District Nursing, delivered an address at this event which was well-recevied and well-informed.
At the same event, two nurses illustrated some of the differences between the District nurse of the 1970s to that of the modern practitioner.
